TO CLAIM YOUR GRANDCHILD AS A DEPENDENT ON YOUR INCOME TAX RETURNS, OBTAIN MEDICAL COVERAGE FOR THE CHILD, APPLY FOR GOVERNMENT SERVICES, AMONG OTHER THINGS- A SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER IS NEED. 

How do I apply?

It is not necessary to be the child's legal guardian in order to obtain a Social Security card for them. Refer to the forms page for the application. The form can be used to request either an original Social Security number or a replacement card. The form includes instructions for completing the application and lists the documents that must be submitted with it. U.S. Citizens need an original or a certified copy of a birth certificate or baptismal record. If you are signing the Social Security Application Form on behalf of your grandchild, you will need to provide proof of your identify as well. 

NOTE: Do not mail the original documents with the application. Make photocopies of the documents and submit the photocopies with the application. 

Social Security provides income benefits to adults, older adults, and children. The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program pays benefits to disabled adults and children who have limited income and resources. SSI benefits are also payable to people 65 and older without disabilities who meet the financial limits
